Domain Name Registration 13
Domain Names Top Search Engines as Traffic Source
When it comes to getting people to your web site, you’ve probably relied on search engine optimization as the Holy Grail. No doubt, search engines are the number one way people find web sites. But “guessing a URL” (otherwise known as direct navigation) may be tied as the most popular way people find web sites, according to a recent study by Internet marketing powerhouse DoubleClick and data from WebSideStory’s StatMarket, makers of the popular HitBox tracking service.

Domains

When people hear the word domain they immediately think of a country or kingdom ruled by a governing body. When we talk about a domain on the Internet the meaning is very similar as it refers to a specific virtual area within the Internet. In fact we visit them everyday when we surf the web and you are currently in the www.bravenet.com domain. We're glad you're here! In this article I hope to share a little more information about how the domain system works and how you can become a king or queen of your own Internet property!

Buy a memorable domain name

Most ISPs provide a little Web space when you buy a connection from them. This is an ideal place to upload any Web site that you create.

However, the URL of your Web space is likely to be something like www.yourisp.co.uk/Web space/username/. This isn’t very memorable and doesn’t reflect the content of your site. This is where buying a domain name and sorting out forwarding to your Web space comes in handy.

Select the top-level domain you want, bearing in mind not only the advantages of more memorable ones like ‘.com’, but also the benefi ts of others. For example, ‘.uk’ domain names are a lot cheaper than .com ones.

They also benefit from a free dispute resolution service.

Some ISPs register the domain name in their name and not yours. This is to be avoided if possible, because it makes moving the administration of the domain name to a different provider more difficult.
