Domain Name Registration 9
Why use multiple domain names?
It's quite common for a site to be referenced by more than one domain name. In fact, most sites are referenced by at least two: a www version and a non-www version. These are usually set up to reference the index page on a site and produce the same results for a searcher.

It could, however, be argued that these are these same domain names. So the question remains: why would someone want to have more than one unique domain name for a single site?

Search engines - First, let's take a brief look at searchengines. In the past, it was a very common spamming technique to purchase dozens, hundreds or in some really gross cases, thousands of domain names, all referencing exactly the same site. These were all submitted to the search engines, and many of them were indexed and blindly added to the results. This is how many questionable sites used to get top search results very quickly and inexpensively.

Domain transfers out of 1&1 1and1

I'm in the process of moving 12 domains from 1&1 and forgot exactly how I did it before.. The process was easy but there is some confusion due to their packaging system and how it works coupled with their uncomprehensive help/faq.

HOW TO TRANSFER A DOMAIN FROM 1&1 ( 1and1 ) :

  1. Login to http://admin.1and1.com/ and unlock domain(s) to transfer
  2. Use the "Info" selection to acquire the Auth Code for each domain to be transferred -- these are needed for confirmations during the remaining process
  3. Adjust DNS as desired if needed - some say setting the DNS to the 1&1 defaults speeds things up. However it may be 6 or 1/2 dozen as DNS changes at 1&1 are pretty slow to happen.
  4. Turn off Private WHOIS if enabled (wait for it to propagate)
  5. Make sure the WHOIS E-Mail addresses are correct
  6. Initiate the transfer request(s) at gaining registrar
  7. Confirm e-mail/links as needed to complete transfer(s)
SAMBA (Domain Controller) Server For Small Workgroups With Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy Badger"

This is a detailed description about the steps to set up a Ubuntu based server (Ubuntu 5.10 - Breezy Badger) to act as file- and print server for Windows (tm) workstations in small workgroups. This howto uses the tdb backend for SAMBA to store passwords and account information. This is suitable for workgroups for up to 250 users and is easier to setup than an LDAP backend. A second howto covering the installation of LDAP + SAMBA will be published on HowtoForge soon.

To Configure DNS Behind a Firewall

Proxy and Network Address Translation (NAT) devices can restrict access to ports. DNS uses UDP and TCP port 53. The DNS Service Management console also uses remote procedure call (RPC). RPC uses port 135. These are potential issues that could arise when you configure DNS and firewalls.
