Oracle Commands

An A-Z Index of Oracle SQL Commands (version 9.2). Words in CAPS are Oracle commands, words in lower-case are the options you can modify.
Sections enclosed in [] are optional, underlined options are the default
Sections enclosed in {} are alternatives. The pipe symbol | indicates OR

Where the layout makes it possibe, braces and the pipe symbol are the preferred method to show alternative options.

This syntax is not always followed rigourously e.g. on a page where almost everything is a variable, to improve readability some variables may be left as lower case but not italic

SQL*Plus

During this laboratory you will build on your databases knowledge by learning the fundamentals of Oracle, one of the most widely used database management system in industry.

SQL*Plus — schemata — data types — DML & DDL examples — editing commands — using external files — the dual pseudo-table — introduction to transactions — optional exercise — references.

First Course in Database Systems Oracle Guide
You will be using the Oracle database system to implement your PDA (Personal Database Application) this quarter. Important: As soon as your Oracle account is set up, you should log in to change the initial password. To use the Oracle bulk loader, you need a control file, which specifies how data should be loaded into the database; and a data file, which specifies what data should be loaded.  You will learn how to create these files in turn. Constraints are declaractions of conditions about the database that must remain true. These include attributed-based, tuple-based, key, and referential integrity constraints. The system checks for the violation of the constraints on actions that may cause a violation, and aborts the action accordingly. Information on SQL constraints can be found in the textbook.
Oracle Relational Database
A database is a structured collection of data. Data refers to the characteristics of people, things, and events. Oracle stores each data item in its own field. For example, a person's first name, date of birth, and their postal code are each stored in separate fields. The name of a field usually reflects its contents. A postal code field might be named POSTAL-CODE or PSTL_CD. Each DBMS has its own rules for naming the data fields.
