One way to have an interactive website is to include a message board (otherwise known as forums, web boards, discussion boards, BBS, bulletin boards, etc) on your site, where visitors can leave messages, read messages left by other visitors and interact with you and the other visitors. If you don't want to mess around with Perl CGI scripts or PHP scripts (or ASP or whatever), you can have a message board on your website simply by including a few lines of HTML on your website. The sites listed on this page will host the forum for you, and some allow a high degree of configurability, so that the forum has the facility and appearance that you want for your site. These remotely hosted message boards often impose some sort of advertising on your BBS, in exchange for hosting your forum. |

You finish building a great ASP.NET application, have everything tested and working right on your local system, are taking full advantage of the new ASP.NET 2.0 Membership, Role and Profile features, and are ready to publish it to a remote hosting environment and share it with the world.
Copying the .aspx files and compiled assemblies to the remote system is pretty easy (just FTP or copy them up). The challenge that confronts a lot of developers, though, is how to setup and recreate the database contents - both schema and data - on the remote hosted site. Unfortunately there hasn't historically been a super-easy way to accomplish this.

It appears that many people are trying to use Gallery in a ftp-only remote access environment. This can be tricky because you don't have the ability to change the web server environment, nor do you necessarily have special privileges. To top it off, you can't run the configure/secure shell scripts remotely. To solve these problems I've reduced the dependencies for Gallery considerably. You are no longer required to have a .htaccess file (which should alleviate many of the problems I've been witnessing). I removed the dependency on mod_rewrite earlier. In the future I'd like to remove the dependency on NetPBM and let you choose from a variety of graphics toolkits.
