Working Groups

There is more detail about each of these Working Groups in the Activity Statement and also on the individual Working Group public web pages. Most Working Groups have both a public web page and another more private one that is only accessible to W3C Members. The private page has telephone numbers, schedules for meetings and conference calls, links to internal editing drafts, and other administrative information.

Using W3C XML Schema
The W3C XML Schema Definition Language is an XML language for describing and constraining the content of XML documents. W3C XML Schema is a W3C Recommendation.

This article is an introduction to using W3C XML Schemas, and also includes a comprehensive reference to the Schema datatypes and structures.

Technical Introduction to XML
This introduction to XML presents the Extensible Markup Language at a reasonably technical level for anyone interested in learning more about structured documents. In addition to covering the XML 1.0 Specification, this article outlines related XML specifications, which are evolving. The article is organized in four main sections plus an appendix.
Strengths of XML

XML is also heavily used as a format for document storage and processing, both online and offline, and offers several benefits:

  • Its robust, logically-verifiable format is based on international standards;
  • The hierarchical structure is suitable for most (but not all) types of documents;
  • It manifests as plain text files, unencumbered by licenses or restrictions;
  • It is platform-independent, thus relatively immune to changes in technology;
  • Its predecessor, SGML, has been in use since 1986, so there is extensive experience and software available.
